oxygen therapy

Medical studies have shown that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), combined with standard medical and/or surgical care, can be an extremely effective treatment for various patient conditions including problem wounds. Hyper (increased) baric (pressure) oxygen therapy delivers 100% oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure in a specially equipped medical device called a Hyperbaric Chamber. This combination allows more oxygen to be dissolved in the plasma and absorbed by the body’s tissues — promoting healing and dramatically improving treatment success in a variety of clinical situations. Perhaps the most familiar use of HBOT is in the treatment of decompression illness and arterial gas embolism. However, the body’s reactions to increased oxygen pressure are varied and multiple. HBOT has been shown to:

  • Increase plasma oxygen and oxygen diffusion distance
  • Aid in peripheral vasoconstriction and reduce edema
  • Inhibit the growth of anaerobic organisms
  • Increase the killing ability of leukocytes
  • Stimulate fibroblast growth to form collagen
  • Induce neovascularization
